RISE, HABIBI
A reawakening of the voices or Arab women poets.
London England

'Rise, Habibi' re-imagines the voices of Arab women across history - from defiant young muslim women condemning the powerful to Jewish teenagers longing for romance, grief stricken brides, and rebellious concubines unimpressed by their mates. Their stories, often left out of traditional historical narratives are now brought to the forefront showcasing women whose voices have transcended time. The show was an all female exhibit and each artist was responding to a poem written by an Arab woman written between the 11-17th centuries.
The curator for the show partnered with Saqi books and the famous Shubback Festival.

It was my utmost honour to be invited to participate in this group exhibition.

I live on the stolen and occupied Quw'utsun' territory. The  Hul'q'uminum'-speaking nations who have governed and cared for this land since time uncounted range from Snaw-Naw-As First Nation (Nanoose Bay) and Snuneymuxw First Nation (Nanaimo) to  Malahat First Nation. Five nations (Cowichan Tribes, Halalt First Nation, Ts'uubaa-asatx First Nation, Lyackson First Nation, and Penelakut Tribe)  form the Hul'q'umi'num' Treaty Group, in protracted talks with non-Indigenous governments to repatriate and protect some of the lands forcefully taken by my society. I witness the inalienable rights of Indigenous Peoples (First Nations, Inuit, Métis). I advocate return of territory, governance, and compensation to Indigenous Nations, and reparations for the genocidal assaults of the colonial occupation of Canada.
